The specialized design of this large data centre, which includes office space, balances the need for a comfortable and inspiring workplace setting with the demand for a highly secure environment that must handle high energy loads. To compensate for its remote location, the facility was designed with a large atrium to provide occupants with an amenity space during the long winter months. At the heart of the three-storey building, the light filled atrium is enlivened with cafeteria seating and breakout spaces, and also serves as a venue for staff meetings and gatherings. To maximize flexibility for current and future use, the office component of the building is a simple uninterrupted rectangle with service cores on one side.

In addition to achieving LEED Platinum certification, BCC Data Centre received Uptime Institute Tier IV certification for redundancy and reliability factors, the first Canadian project to achieve this designation.
